Default RE: Speedometer has lost it's marbles...

Hello,
I have similar car with similar problems. 05 Monte Carlo SS. Speedometer would begin to read low and eventually stay at zero if I was driving for long period (after 2-3 hours). Convieniently, after the warranty ended last month, the speedometer issues begin to occur after only 20 minutes of driving. Also, the temp guage wont reset to zero when the car is off, so when I turn the car on, the temp guage goes up from where ever it was resting at . . . makes it difficult to read . The fuel guage just started to do the same thing as the temp guage. Is the $400 you mentioned the price of the part or the price of the repair to have it done? Is it an easy repair to do yourself?

When you first turn on the car and it starts between 40-60 it needs to be reset. The only way I have found to do this is turn the iginition from off to acc. Let the gauges reset. Turn it back off and back to acc. You will notice it goes down a bit - like 5 mph. Just keep doing this till it goes to zero.

I had this problem myself. It has recropped back up but with the oil pressure gauge. The correct fix is to replace the gauge cluster but I've done that once already under warantte and I'm not anxious to drop $400 down on a new cluster.
How long ago did you have the cluster fixed and how long did it take before the problems came back with the oil gauge? I don't want to spend ANY money if it won't fix the problem. Does this problem fall under lemon laws? Any way to pressure GM into a recall?

Chucks88ss,
Thanks for the info, I will check out the website.

This past weekend my temp guage went.
I was sitting at a red light, and happened to look at my guages. The temp gauge was all the way up into the red. But thanks to the awesome members here on the MCF, I remembered there was an issue with the guages in the 2000-2005 Monte's. Checked the message center to make sure the engine wasn't overheating for real.

This happened the day after my factory warranty expired. Luckily I had the extended warranty. They told me the entire guage cluster is going to have to be replaced.

btw... I did take pics. The first is when it was in the red. The other is shortly after, when the needle continued to wrap around higher than the guage reads.

I think it was about a year or 2 before this part went again. It was working fine for awhile, but then I have parked it for the last month and have been driving the truck.
