6th Gen ('00-'05): Service Traction System but no codes
Hello guys. I have a problem with my 2002 SS. She has 110,000 on her and sometimes when I start her up the abs and traction off lights come on along with the message center saying service traction system. I have read some threads saying it could be the wiring or the wheel hubs and to check your codes and see which wheel is causing the problems. Well I checked the codes and there are absolutely no abs codes at all. We have an hp tuner and they are capable of reading abs codes. I also took her to a shop and they found no abs codes either. They checked the connections to the hubs and said they look fine. What should I do from here? Advice would be greatly appreciated.
only if the abs light is on, will there normally be a code present. your abs system goes through a self test cycle every time you start the vehicle, if a problem is detected, your abs light/ traction control light will stay on, and this system will be disabled. if you are checking with your programmer, dont clear any codes. it may be possible for a full capacity scanner (snap-on, otc) to be able to read history codes, and see what has been stored, as long as it hasnt been cleared out of memory. your abs lights should come on, on start up, then go off. this is normal operation until the self test is done. abs and traction control are in the same system.
Try unpluging your brake fluid resivour sensor and see if it disiapears.... A co worker of mine had the symtoms of wheel bearing failure and turns out it was that sensor, only reason we tried that was compairing his car to mine, as mine the sensor was busted by a previous owner

If it's tripping those lights, there has to be some "history" codes stored. Not all scan tools can read the previously thrown codes that are in history (as the code condition is no longer active). I know the Snap-On scan tool I typically use can read historical data.
Because it's free and easy, try out Justin's suggestion. If that does not do it, inspect your ABS speed sensor wires (perhaps one is damaged). Otherwise, it sounds like a possible failing wheel bearing/ABS speed sensor.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The abs light is definitely on when this happens. No one can find a code though. I know that the hp tuners we have is able to read history codes because I have two BCM codes in there now with the prefix (History) I would assume that it could also read historic abs codes. The BCM codes are not related to the brakes at all. One is something about a door lock switch and I forget what the other is. Thanks Justin for the tip on the sensor! I will definitely try that if it happens again. The car hasn't done it for a couple of days.
Thanks! I am going to have to check that out. Maybe that is why my gauges randomly reset sometimes while I'm driving too. Hopefully the air box isn't too difficult to get out.
