Default radiator fan

I have the two fans cooling the motor. Only one of them comes on all the time....is the other only suppose to come on when it over heats or do I need either new fans or a fan motor? It does run hot quite often but then the fan comes on....

Both fans should run at the same time or not at all. From a cold start and the AC off the fans will not run until normal engine temperature is reached. After that, both fans turn on at low speed until temp. drops below operating temp. then they shut off and the process is continuously repeated as the Engine Coolant Temp. (ECT)sensor communicates with the PCM which commands the fans to run or not depending on temperature and load. If the temperature goes above normal operating temp. both fans run at high speed. If the AC is turned on both fans run at low or high speed depending on ECT and/or AC demand. Try turning on your AC, both fans should run. If not, there's a problem. Could be a number of electrical issues (fan control module, FC relay, fuses, ground or shorted out wire, or the fan motor. Try jiggling the wiring with the AC on and see if you get any response. Or you can jumper or swap around the wiring from the fan you know runs to the one that doesn't to eliminate a fan motor problem. You can swap around the FC relays to identify a relay problem. Check fuses, terminal connections and ground wire connections. Other than that you'll need to probe for a shorted out wire or circuit.

Hope this helps, keep us posted.

So I went and bought a new fan. It was a little pricey due to it needing a dual fan but now both fans work now! I wanted to just change the fans motor but no one sold it without the whole fan assembly.
