I'm curious and I'm willing to be enlightened... What is the reason behind going to a longer filter. Obviously it will hold more volume of oil, but what make it attractive to do??

I'm partial to wix/napa filters and K&N. They always rank high on the filter tests. the K&N has the nut on the bottom for ease of removal with headers in the way. On small block chevys, I like to use a big block filter for extra oil capacity.
Using a bigger filter for extended changes is incorrect. I would also recommend changing it at every oil change. As cheap and ease of removal they are, its not worth the risk. And who wants clean oil running through a dirty filter
I'd stay away from fram. I've heard horror stories of blowing up fram filters while driving, locking up motors

I can't remember off the top of my head right now, but I THINK the 06/07 V6 Monte's come stock with the PF 52 Ac Delco...I know it's a larger filter than the 3800's stock filter.
For anyone looking to extend the drain interval, a filter alone is not the way to do it. If you put a quality oil filter AND fully synthetic oil, you can safely extend your drain interval.
