Default Issue with battery or not sure..

I'll be honest, I'm a bit a fool and when buying this 2004 monte carlo with high miles I was expecting issues and was willing to learn or look up stuff when issues started arising. Well, this is my first major issue with the car when I went to start up the vehicle but there was no power or ignition clicking noise. With the no power portion I mean there is no power to the headlights, interior lighting, and radio. The only light that comes on when I turn the key is check engine but I was made aware before that it was a minimal issue with a gas cap or something of the sort. Went to a place and checked the code before and the people said there it was no major issue. Now I'm wondering if the check engine light is for something much worse or if the car battery is just completely dead by getting drained somehow last night, if that was the case I would've though there still would be some power or the ignitionwould click? Right?

Either way if anyone can share some insight I'd really appreciate it and if it's just the battery from the sound of it I really apologize for any wasted time.

The kind of electrical issue you described can be tedious to track down but, once found, are surprisingly simple to repair.

Start with the basics. How old is your battery? If it's less than three years old, it may be ok. Nevertheless, measure the voltage: it should be higher than 11.3V.

Check all your fuses. Do this by pulling ONLY one fuse out, checking continuity, then putting it back where it belongs before checking the next fuse.

Check your battery connections. When I say "check", I mean disconnect the battery cables at the battery terminal, clean them with steel wool then reconnect them. Do the same at the other end where the (+) cable connects to the starter and the (-) connects to ground.

Using your service manual, locate your connectors and check them.

Good luck

These cars will use active battery juice to maintain them selves and if you have a week battery or one that is going bad it will cause some headaches.
Make sure you clean the terminals where the cable connects tot he battery also not sure if you have a post connection or a side terminal.
If it is a side terminal you might want to clean inside where the connection is. On thing too is that if the alternator goes south on a car they will alot of times kill the battery.
You may find a youtube on the battery issues that will give you some tips too.
