I have a 2000 MC LS. I'm looking to install a new or several new power outlets on my dashboard for use with my iphone and computer, that stuff. I know how to install the actual outlet but i'm completely lost on the wiring. How do i wire it tapping into another 12 volt wire? And where is another 12 volt wire in the dashboard that i can tap into? what tools do i need? I appreciate any feedback.

 

If you're planning on drawing more than the cigarette lighter puts out (combined between all of the accessories you'll have running at once)- then I'd run a fresh power wire from the battery (shouldn't need much more than a 14 gauge- maybe 12 gauge wire tops depending on the draw)- and its own fuse. I wouldn't recommend just tapping off another wire if you plan to add more than cig lighter can run.

 

Yeah, just run a 12g wire to a switch, then through a fuse, then to the power outlet... that way you dont have constand draw off the battery unless you need it. Then run your ground off the outlet and that should be it! avoid splicing into other wires like bumpin said, that wont handle the draw your taking and may cause issues

 

Run a wire straight to the batt going to a relay. And then use a switch 12v circuit to trigger the relay. Unless of course you want power to always be on, which in case, just run a wire to the batt and call it a day.

 

I just figured if he planned to use an Ipod and Computer on it, that he'd want it live all the time- to charge the laptop and such.
