Default How to know if a new key cylinder is needed when replacing the Igitionn switch?

I replaced the igition switch yesterday (5 years after the last replacement) and still have a starting problem. 50% of the time I need to turn it over 2-3 times before it catches. That was the problem when I changed it out the last time. Still happens after the change. I have never changed the cylinder. How do you know when to replace the key cylinder?

I dropped $100 onn an AC Delco switch. Could it be bad out of the box? That happened to me last time but I bought a cheaper one first.

My Ignition switch is such a tight fit! The only way I can get my Ignition switch in place is to put in the lower bolt first, get a few thread going o the top bolt and ust tighten it into position. Does that seem right? It's like one of the wires is too short.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Mike

As far as I know, the key cylinder just turns the ignition switch. If it turns smoothly, it shouldn't be a problem. When you say "turn it over 2-3 times before it catches", do you mean you turn the key to start and the starter doesn't engage for 2-3 turn/start motions? Try pushing the shift lever forward as you turn to start. If you haven't, you might replace the starter relay. They do get weak/go bad. Also, feel the starter relay with someone turning the switch to start and observe if you feel it clicking. You may need a new starter solenoid/starter if it is clicking. This video is very good for understanding testing of the switch circuit.
I've used some of his other videos with success.

Sounds like the starter may need to be replaced. I would also check fuel pressure as a weak pump or a pump with a bad return valve would make it harder to start as there would be less fuel to ignite to start the car
