Default Ignition Switch Issue?

I've got a 2001 Monte Carlo LS. A few weeks ago, I began having the "security" message show up in the message box sporadically. This morning, I turned the key and heard a quiet whining noise and it wouldn't start (i'm 99% positive that the battery isn't the problem). After some digging, I saw that it may be a faulty ignition switch. However, I don't know what specifically needs to be replaced. Do I need the entire ignition switch system (like $160 i think) replaced or just the ignition cylinder (like $40)? I need the car for work and don't really want to tow it to a mechanic, so any tips would help!
