Exclamation Hi, new member with serious problem! please help

Hi, my names Wayne and im having a problem with my 2000 monte. In the process of making a u-turn my car started knocking and wouldnt go anywere. On further investigation my front wheels are completely independent from the transmission now. In park it makes no noise but rolls like the park isnt engaging and when in drive or reverse is when the knocking starts. My cars literally on the side of.the road right now until i can get home thru a friend. Does anybody have any ideas or heard of something similar? Im hoping the tranny isnt fried amd that it came disconected somehow, your greatly appreciated

Sounds like a cv axle broke. That happen to me once. When you hit the gas in drive it makes a loud grinding noise but in park or neutral no noise. Mine did it making a turn too.

Could very well be an axle there is a few internal parts in the trans that would have these symptoms but you weren't beating on it when it happened so highly unlikely it's internals. My vote is axle as well. Good luck and welcome to mcf!!

Any update OP? FYI when I bought my CV Axles from RockAuto in December they were $45/each for new (not remanufactured). Installation was a breeze, the worst part was taking the ball joint out of the steering knuckle but I hit the knuckle with a big hammer and it was pretty easy.

(Sidenote, I don't know if hitting the knuckle was the right thing to do or not but I replaced the Control Arm/Bushings/Ball Joint assembly the next month so I didn't think it was a big deal.)
