Default Help with 97 grand prix se

My bother has a 97 grand prix se with the 3.8and recently his winshield wipers when he turns them off they go to the full up position. Then when he turns them on they will work like normal stop at the bottom go to the top and back to the bottom. then when he turns them off they go back to the top instead of going down further like they should do ( just like mine does on my monte they stop at the bottom and then snap further down)

any ideas of what it could be.

i had a similar problem with a saturn i owned, the motor itself had got stuck at one point, and ended up making it backwards. it's really hard to explain without a picture of what a wiper motor looks like.

he could try pushing the arms back down when they are up but i'm not sure if it will fix the problem or make his wipers go really far down and end up breaking something. i recommend to have a mechanic look at it unless he's mechanically inclined.

don't jump the gun tho someone might have a better suggestion.

i ended up having to pull the dash out of my saturn to get at the wiper motor. hopefully it's not the same concept in the monte carlo.

damn i wish i had my job at the chev dealer still so i could look at the diagram and see where the wiper motor is located.

the wiper crank arm catches a lil tab on the wiper transmission frame/support, the lil tab may be bent or worn, the part of the crank arm that catches itmay also be worn. repair can often be made by bending the tab back a bit, 95% of the work is getting to it. if its too far gone, i think a new wiper transmission frame/support and crank arm are around $300

Sounds like the wiper motor motor to me. I've had that problem before, but not on a Monte.

Me and my brother couldn't figure it out. we took off the cover and the wipers to were you could see the whole assembly. and we couldn't see any tab that seemed to be out of place. so we ended up just unbolting it and switching it around so it now stays up when the wipers are in the on position and are in park in the off position.

We went to advanced auto and they said it is probably the switch or the motor. the price for a new switch was like some $400 dollars and a price for a motor was $150 so i think my broke college brother is happy with the fix.
