Thank you for such an awesome write-up. I've now owned two 04 Monte's and both of them suffered from the Driver side heated seat issue.

My previous car, I never bothered with fixing it because GM quoted $600 for them to do it ($400 for the part and $200 for the labor). I wasn't about to pay $600 just to have a toasted bum during winter.

Now my current car is suffering the same fate and I'm going to be able to fix it thanks to the pictures and easy to follow guide!

Thanks again!

Question: (I found the burned spot on the foam and the black wire was still attached to the bare wire that heats the seat. The brown wire was burned and not making connection. I could not find a brown wire coming from the heating element in the back seat. So, do I connect the brown wire to the bare wire (which is the heating element for the back seat)? This would be connecting both the black and brown wire to the bare wire. Is this correct? I don't want to cause a short. Please help on this!

If this is not correct then what do I attach the brown wire to?

Brown to bare #1, black to bare #2... so my understanding of your situation goes.

Default Yes.

Thanks for the fast response. I rechecked and found the other bare wire. It was somewhat difficult to find but cut some of the foam away and there it was.

Make DAMN sure those bare wires are separated. The foam wont hold them apart as well at that point. If you run out of room, pull the seat out and work with it with full flexibility. Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine.

Update: Soldered the two wires together, put a small wire nut on the soldered wires to make them more secure, then put electrical tape on it. Started the car, turned on the heater switch, waited a few minutes and seat got hot like it should.

I couldn't have done it without the help of this forum. MANY THANKS!!!

It looks like the system has been changed slightly after 2004, because I was having the same symptoms people described in my drivers seat. My switch comes on, lights up for about 15 seconds and shuts off. I pulled my seat apart, and found a slightly different design from what has been posted here. I've got no burn marks (sadly), and playing around with the configuration made no difference Below is what the setup on a 2006 LT looks like. It's two wires coming in from the bottom and list laid base, exposed to make contact with the bare wires of the heating element on the seat. I'm open to any other suggestions anyone might have as I was hoping to have this fixed before the Michigan winter got here...
