clunking/ binding noise/while turning wheel
hi i have A 2000 monte w/110,000 miles on it. so every time you turn the wheel it cluncks and binds while turning. if you lift the front tires off the ground the goes away. it only does it when theirs pressure on the tires. i had some tell me to replace my intermidate shaft another told me to just lube the hell out if . so where is the intermidate shaft and is this the problem. do i replace it or lube it. thank dom
wheres the noise/binding coming from? in the steering wheel/ column or like out at the wheels?!? and as far as the I shafts go some can be lubed and some cant... i would say your better off replacing it cuz then you know its good and if you just lube it it might not solve the problem or it might only temporarily fix it...
we get alot of those in at the dealer i work at in impalas and monte's and cobalts etc. its an easy repair and prolly not too spendy

oh. and the I shaft is what connects your steering wheel to the steering rack. its under the dash theres one bolt and the other is under the car on the rack. just un bolt the two and pull it out from the dash side... and when its disconnected make sure you dont turn the wheel or you will have to re- align the front end so i usually use like a bungee strap to hold the steering wheel in place and keep the wheels in the same place to so it just slips right back in

Okay, let's describe the noise some more.
When you are turning, do you kind of feel it in your hand? Kind of like... if you were rubbing on a t-shirt or similar piece of cloth?
If so, I had that and I did the lube job myself. I got myself some lubrication (wd-40 at first, but that wore off) then I got myself some gun oil that my dad had lying around that he uses for his nails guns. In spray form.
What I did was go under the steering wheel, where your courtesy light is, there are 2 clips, unclip those and the plastic piece will fall down. Now look for a bright greenish rubber boot. Peel that away and the exposed piece is what you need to shoot with the oil. Turn the car on, turn the wheel 90° and spray some more.
Close the boot back up, put the plastic piece back on, and you'll be good to go, until you have the time/money to get it properly fixed
(granted it's your intermediate steering shaft)
