Default check engine cooling fan

got a check engine light on, autozone checked it, cooling fan 1, car is not overheating but seems fans not coming on? I checked fuses, they were ok? whats next? I don't want to replace both fan setup if I don't have to! although Rockauto has fan replacements pretty cheap? I cleaned the fan plugs with electrical cleaner too???

I would assume you could apply 12v to the fan and see if it activates. Also check if the wiring for the fan has good ground and that the positive traces back to the fuse panel. I believe there are also relays for the fans to check.
