2006 Single Loud Click No Crank
2006 Monte Carlo. Has always started and run despite having every body problem a MC could have. It sat for a couple of weeks, and battery died completely. Could not open car with bad door lock cylinder. After a total of 7 weeks and I was able to get into the car.
Hooked Monte Carlo up to another car with jumper cables. All dash power is there. Radio, blowers all work. Key in ignition and turn, starter has loud click, but no crank.
I've had dead batteries, and the starter would click rapidly with the clicks slowing down as the battery ran out of amps. But in this case, there is a single, loud click about once every 1-2 seconds.
Does this confirm bad starter? Or could it still not be getting enough amps from my much older jumper cables? I should be able to jump it even with a completely dead battery correct? I just want to make sure it still starts before I buy a battery because I can't put hundreds of dollars into the aging girl with so much else wrong with it.
A side note, even with power to the car, it will not respond to the key FOB. I guess it could have gone bad too, but that is a pretty big coincidence. There is no security light on the dash when I try to start it. I had hoped it would start responding after the car was started, which per my post it hasn't been yet.
Any help is appreciated!

My experience is that a truly dead battery (not just mostly discharged) can't get enough amps to the starter through a jump. A single click only, sounds like too little power to the starter. You should have the battery tested, the best next diagnosis is to eliminate the battery as the problem with one that is known to be good. 5 years on a battery is pretty good these days, I went through 3 Delcos at 3-3.5 years each with daily driving. I suspect the security system may not operate the fob if the battery isn't strong enough. My fob worked just fine after I switched out my BCM with a 2000 but my battery was hooked up (and charged) the entire time it was down.
All of these newer vehicles constantly use power to keep the system going if you have a bad battery it will give you fits.
During winter storage many of the fellows that I know put a trickle charger on the car, to keep the thing functioning.
If it is a 5 year old battery it is done get a replacement.
When the battery won't get the starter going it will cause the starter to go bad too.
Alternator that is weak will kill a battery too. things to keep in mind.
If you can borrow a battery from another car that may help you get it moving.
