2005 Monte Carlo - gauge cluster goes nuts when driving
I have a 2005 Monte Carlo. The gauge cluster randomly lights ups all the warning lights, ie. air bag, battery, ABS, Traction Control, the speedomter goes right to the max on the guage and the rpms go to zero. This happens when I am driving (at any speed) quite freqently but there is no effect on the car at all, it just keeps driving like nothing happened. The cluster looks like it does when you are trying to start the car.....the only difference is the car is running and moving.
The dealer cannot duplicate the problem, therefore no fix. Any ideas.

There are several possible causes for this. All instrument cluster display functions are controlled by what is called a class 2 data line with all display commands coming from the powertrain control module.A problem with the class2 circuit could cause this. There is also a logic module inside of the instrument cluster that receives the class2 data from the PCM,interprets the data and commands the displays(gauges,telltales,etc.).Obviously the only way to accuratelydiagnose this is for it to act up while a technician that understands how the cluster operates can monitor clusterinput data with a Tech2 scan tool. Many intermittents like this only can be repaired by trying the "most likely" repair based upon the technicians previous repairexperiences with similiar problems. As you already know, many dealers will not go the extra to try to resolve the problem if they cannot duplicate the condition. If your vehicle was in my shop I would be inclined to condemn the cluster itself, just based on seeing other Monte's & Impala's with the exact same problem in the past in which I know cluster replacement repaired the problem. Sorry for the long winded reply!!
i too had this problem with my monte...it happens randomly and then it goes away for a while...i'm afraid to take it to the dealership cause im sure theyll try to milk me and prob not fix it
