2001 Monte SS CV Boot Rubbing Frame
On Sunday I discovered the CV boot on the right inner CV joint had come apart. Grease everywhere - what a mess. I replaced the axle with a new one from NAPA. The new inner CV boot is rubbing on the frame. That's probably why the old one failed.
The axle had been replaced in February 2011 with a new one from NAPA. They give me new one without charge.
Could it be a bad engine mount that has caused the engine to settle or maybe I need an OEM axle? What should the clearance be between the boot and frame? On the left side it is about 1/2 inch.
2001 Monte SS 3.8 165000 miles.
Thanks,
Bob

I doubt it's the axle itself. Check the engine cradle and it's bushings and check the motor mounts, also ensure the axle is in all the way to the transmission. Those are the first spots I'd consider. It sounds like either the axle is not in all the way (which would make re-assembly a pain) or something is causing the engine/trans to not sit properly.
It could also be a suspension issue. I would check the strut to make sure its not loose or worn out also check the spring to make sure it's seated properly. I'm thinking these areas could cause a mis-alignment and force the axle to be stretched out a bit causing it to rub.
UPDATE!
I got to probing the front motor mount with a screwdriver and chunks of rubber came out. I put a floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan and gently jacked it up. I was able to lift the engine about an inch without much effort. I'll be changing the motor mounts next.

Maybe they gave you the wrong one for your vehicle?
Maybe check with the dealer for the part# and compare it with the one you got for free????
