1987 Monte Carlo Wont go into gear

Kinda hard to tell which style Hurst shifter it is. Most have a reverse lockout. On mine I have to pull up on a lock to disengage which I don't see in your picture. A few questions. Did it work prior ? Is it still connected to the factory system that also turns the steering column at the same time ? If you disconnect the cable off the shifter will it shift the transmission ? Kinda hard to see but my lockout is right below the top handle

Hurst is a premier shifter they have been around for years, Mine were with manual Transmissions.
One thing you could try it look up Hurst shifter on google and select videos and there might be exactly the one you need on there.

As I stated earlier there are different versions. Mine is a V matic and as shown has one. Perhaps yours is supposed to push down or over to release the lock. Driver#3 had a good idea and try a Google search, just need to figure out what style shifter it is. Good luck
