My monte starts fine 1st thing in the morning. If I shut the engine off (during the day) and start it back up within 5-10 minutes, it makes this rough crank sound and it takes about 3-4 sec of cranking to start. When this happens it sound different when it cranks and not smooth different. If I wait longer, it starts fine. What could it be? I replaced the starter and the battery last year. Made no difference.

 

I'm guessing the starter. Unless you put in a NEW starter, most rebuilt starters are rebuilt enough to make them work, and that's it. I HATE rebuilt parts, but sometimes it's just a fact of life.
