Default 02 Monte Carlo SS Long/loud crank

My monte starts fine 1st thing in the morning. If I shut the engine off (during the day) and start it back up within 5-10 minutes, it makes this rough crank sound and it takes about 3-4 sec of cranking to start. When this happens it sound different when it cranks and not smooth different. If I wait longer, it starts fine. What could it be? I replaced the starter with a new one and the battery last year. Made no difference.

I know this is an old thread but I am now going through this problem as well. When I start my engine, there is this loud grinding sound like you try to re-crank the engine while its already running. It's very annoying and I don't want it to be a costly repair later on down the line. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Have you checked out your starter also is it on a decline or incline when it happens? I had the same thing happen to me until I had to replace the starter and the fly wheel . the starter made a dead spot on the fly wheel that's why I had to replace it. down side is I told from one of the tec from the dealer he said one of the bearings was going bad in the starter making a really bad grinding werring sound he showed me when he hit my old one with a jump box. He did say one thing it is very hard for our starters to go bad he has seen them go out further down the road. but it is not uncommon for hearing a loud roar coming from it
