Default 01 LS Front end noise

there is an inconsistent whirring/winding noise coming from the engine area when started.
the noise disappears after acceleration/ driving for a few minutes. its REALLY loud. but it doesn't always make the noise.
my guess is something to do with the fan or belts.
its not a knocking sound or anything.
any ideas guys?

thanks for any help.

Default RE: 01 LS Front end noise

is your front end noise like a sucking like noise? If this is the case there is a number of things it could be, vacuum lines, airbox problems, miss induction in your intake, you would have to have somebody check it out. But DONT FORGET, monte carlos do have a loud whirrling noise when the engine is running at idle, they all do unless there is serious modification. It sound almost like a turbocharger spooling up, however..thats defiantly NOT the case..(i wish). But on the flipside if your noise sounds more mechanical ....my guess is it could be the power steering pump when its turning on. Possibly meaning that its running low on fluid...or that it could be on its way out...but its hard to tell for sure without hearing the noise. But have fun with trying to check the fluids on that...the resevoir for the power steering is far all the way back to the firewall and damn near the bottom of your engine bay....very difficult and poorly designed! But best of luck
