Head units - help me pick one!
wow they really do make a bypass, but basicly thats just a low current relay as near as i can tell, just solid state stuff.
I have no experience with indash GPS and DVD units...I've only worked with I guess what should now be considered "old school" head units? Just the straight up, used to run an Alpine.
Anyways, I assume the sound quality out of these $600 mega-units is pretty **** good? Do they just work normally when hooking up to an AFTERMARKET amplifier and aftermarket speakers (I will be rerunning all the speaker wiring, etc when I replace the stock system)? What about subs? I did not see the RCA hook ups on these units?

Personally, I love Kenwood. Great sound & I have had minimal problems, mostly was my last head unit. It had a rotating keypad that the cold Chicago weather just eventually took it's toll on. I upgraded to the GPS in dash unit, DNX-9140. It's a great unit, my only gripe is it doesn't offer gapless playback (what decade are they living in).
Anyway, that's pretty pricey. If you want a solid cheap unit, Sony Xplod offers pretty good sound for a relatively low price. You can get one for as low as 80-90 bucks. My cousin paired one with Xplode 6x9s & it sounded like he had subs. I was shocked the first time I heard him pull up because I honestly thought he had gotten some 12s.

This is true, but a lot of times the more expensive unit offers a wider frequency range and clearer sound. They usually also tend to offer more options in regards to customizing the sound. Still, you can find really good units for pretty cheap.
not really, any deck over 200$ is going to sound about the same as pioneers 1000$ deck. this all aside, i just picked up the sony 770bt from their new line, just installed it...kind of a pain with the external GPS unit, but very handy, very stable platform, ive been tweaking around on it, i havnt found anything i dont really dislike about it at all. its a strong sable unit, for a very good price, sony did good by this unit, thats for sure! :
