A guy at the impala forum made the K&N CAI for the SS fit on his 3.9. So it can be done. Its just way too expensive for me now with CHristmas and all. Ebay has cheaper but still at about $200.

Its just a matter of making a new heat sheild? Can't modify the one it came with? What about the tube? I have the 3.5 so I'd think I have more room under the hood than the 3.9 and the 5.3 wrong bend in the tube to make it fit near the head light?

In my humble opinion ( having modified hundreds of cars in the past 30 years ) the major source of restriction on the 3.9 is the restrictor at the front of the airbox. I cut off the front panel on mine, and installed a K&N filter. Total cost- $45. I really doubt any $200+ kit would provide more of a power increase. Sounds good, too! I took this vid right after modifying the airbox: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Nt4Vc7vYm_g
As an aside, I did the original prototype headlight installation for GM, modifying a 2005 Monte to take the '06 head lights. It required serious surgery on the front corners of the engine compartment where the airbox goes. No surprise, then, that a unit designed for an '05 won't fit!

I dug out this picture that I took at the time:
The original air horn' purpose is to quiet down the intake noise, but it's smaller in diameter than the mass air sensor- doesn't take a genius to figure out that's not good!

Yes, it's a drop in. As for does it really help- as much as an aftermarket unit, which is to say you'd probably need a dyno to really see the differnce. "Butt dynos" see what they want to see. If you get 10 horsepower more (possible), you'd probably need to be an experienced drag racer to feel it. It's the combination of getting more air in, and more out that adds up to noticeable improvements ( a couple tenths or better )
