Straight pipe in place of converter
Have you thought about doing an electric cutout (like a Qtec or DMH)? You could just have a dump welded to the bottom of your downpipe at the base of the firewall, and bolt the cutout on. That way you could get the loudest possible sound when you want, go back to how it is now when you want (ie if police are behind you or you're in a neighborhood)- or anywhere in between. They run under $200.
A cat delete isn't going to have a major difference in sound volume- the mufflers do the bulk of the sound reduction. It will be a little louder and raspier without it, but its not going to be a massive difference.
I dont want a open header sound so the cutout idea doesn't sound good to me but thanks for the idea.
I also reccomend just doing a downpipe if you want to do this, its easier and will get rid of some of the restriction up top too.
I would do the downpipe but I think it is a waste of money. I have a short downpipe, but it doesn't get rid of the cat or u-bend. I will just add a piece and but the bung in. Cheaper that way. Then i will get the pcm.
Outside of a top swap, the only other cheap mod with decent power gains would be some ER rockers.

What are ER rockers? I looked up roller rockers on most 3800 performance sites and they are outrageous. Thanks for all your help.
Hey...about the converter delete again...I have a buddy who said he read on the gp site that you can put a resistor on one of the wires to the o2 sensor so your CEL wont be on. Does anyone know anything about this?
I think there is more to it than that. They sell and "O2 emulator" which is a little box that plugs in place of the rear O2, and it seems like with the size of the box there would be more than just a tiny resistor in there. But I could be wrong.
If you're really interested in performance anyways, you really should look into getting a tuned pcm- its a nice mod on its own, plus then you get the benefit of not worrying about the code either.
