I would like do do something to my exhuast also but I'm stuck on weather it should be duals with cherry bombs (the pipe only cost 20 bucks each for cherry bombs) or flowmasters (each muffler costs about 80 bucks each). Either way the tips will cost me $65 each. One of the buddies I do the work on my cars with has a custom build '03 Grand Prix Gt witha 3800 engine and has dual cherry bombs and they have a nice rumble not overdone I like it but wondering if anyone has flowmasters on and how loud they are? Thanks

3400's actually sound better then 3800's imo. 3800's sound like a glorified leaf blower when they've had a lot of work done to them. But I do enjoy the sound of my idle.

Borla mufflers are the best. If you get them that will add to the cost a lot though. I've never really liked the way that cherry bombs look (red and all), but if you can't see them then that's okay.

The price is going to vary depending on what shop you take it too. Shop around (get prices) and expect to pay at least $300 for an aluminized exhaust system, but I recommend getting stainless steel. Stainless will cost more of course, but it will last forever.

I don't mean to jack the thread, but is this due to the difference in angles (60 degree vs. 90 degree V6) or different firing orders or something? Just curious.

Alright. I had this done. I had my resonator patched (leaking). Then custom fabbed piping into a Y pipe, stainless piping. I got dual Mangaflows. 198.19 for those. 88.99 for all the stainless piping. 12.95 for the drivers side hanger. 225 to fab everything and install. Then 109.10 for stainless tips. Plus 29.95 for misc. B/S.

Basically 418.03 for parts and 225 for labor.

i had mine put on for <$100, get another muffler and ypipe from a 3800, monte or grand prix will work fine, and then just get the drivers side hanger custom fabbed at the shop and everything put on with your choice or tips or without them

check my youtube page for the sound, they are stock type mufflers and sound awesome in my opinion

Right, but stock piping is aluminized steel...stainless steel is MUCH better, it'll last too, whereas aluminized won't.

the diff is probably in the firing order. im not sure about the 3400 for sure, but my DOHC fires 123456... the 3800's fire 654321. im pretty sure 3400's fire 1-6 also. the reverse firing order on the 3800 might cause a different "reversion" effect in the exhaust manifolds that contributes to is sound. angle of the block i don't think has much to do with the sound. the angle and flow of the vales to the exhaust port would make more of a diff. this is another reason i love the sound of the DOHC... good flowing heads, proper firing order, and non of them push-rods. then again they can have lifter tap too.

As for the original thread... my recommendation is the following.

-the stock down pipe i believe is 2.5" on all these cars... if not i would say upgrade it if you are looking to do a lot of mods down the road. 2.5" is perfect for NA and even mild boost.
-Save the factory Cat as it flows fine for almost any NA application. i didn't need to replace mine. i don't really regret it, but i could have spent the money elsewhere.
-after the cat, put one long muffler. saves money and weight vs having two at back.
-run 2.5" pipe and split into a Y and run your tips. i deff recommend spending the extra and getting stainless tips. do it right the first time and be done with it.

if the sound is too loud then you have space to run another muffler, glass pack, or resonator.
