Thats the worst thing you could do for an engine, most filters use a paper element, which in time breaks down. A filter should be changed more often than the oil because the filter is what remove hrmful particles lie bearing parts and such from going through your engine and tearing it apart.

Also, using wix filters is probably the best you can find, they are a little more expensive, but worth it. NASCAR teams use wix for a reason, because they perform the best under extreme circumstances. Ive used fram and other types of filter in my race car motor, and didnt see the results i wanted to see from a filter. We change oil after every race, and sometimes change a filter twice in a night. Every time a filter comes of the motor we cut it apart to see what it holds. its normal to see minor particles in your oil, but if you see a chunk bigger than 1/16th of an inch it is something to worry about. next time you change your oil filter, cut it apart and pull the element out, then spread the element to see what is in it. also try to strain the oil that comes out of the filter after its cut apart, heavy metals wont pick up and set into the filter, pm me if you guys have any more questions.

Thanks

i do it usually twice if i am planning to let the monte sit and drive my mustang or nab my dads cougar. i know when you let a engine sit for longer than a month the oil starts to break down and thikens. thats what a mobil 1 rep told me when i worked at that dealer. he said if you want to have your engine live a really long time as in body rusts off before the engine dies do the maintenence as in do the oil and things like that

Kinda funny, I thought (and still think) the same thing, the filter could probably be changed more often, but at LEAST during an oil change is reasonable. Here's a paraphrase exert from my '94 Grand Am manual:

-Most trips less then 4 miles
-Most trips less then 10 miles and outside temp remains below freezing
-Most trips include extended idling and/or frequent low speed use (stop-n-go)
-When towing a trailer
-When using in dusty areas
***Change oil and filter every 3,000 miles or 3 months

NOW... Wait for it... Wait for it... OK!!
Here's what made me go
If none of the driving conditions above match
***Change oil every 7,500 miles or 12 months
***Change filter every other change.

Honest to GOD, 1994 Pontiac Grand Am Owner's Manual, pages 226 and 228, looking at them RIGHT NOW to make sure I was right about what I just typed.
