every 3 grand it's a new 6 qt's Mobil1 5-30 Fully Synthetic and new filter. I used to use fram until i was told that's breaking a major commandment, so i changed to wix a couple changes ago. No complaints, but then again you can't really tell if you're filter's doing a good job or not...

On my 1996 Lumina, I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I use whatever oil/filter package is on sale when I walk in the store. I've gone 210,000 miles so far.

My 1999 Monte has GM's Oil Life Monitor. I do what it says. Last time, that was over 6,000 miles. Typical driving is an in town 25 mile commute at speeds of 30-50 MPH. 98,000 miles so far. Conventional oil.

The wife's 2008 Dodge Caravan also has an Oil Life Monitor - it lights up after 2,500-3,000 miles. I do what the monitor says. The Caravan does a lot of really short trips (under one mile) to drop off and pick up kids from school. 41,000 miles so far. This one goes to the Dodge dealer for oil changes. At the dealer, I can purchase a package of four oil changes for $45.00 - you can't beat that.

GM has their own brand of it. You can pick it up at a dealership.

I'd do mine between 4000 and 6000. Usually closer to 4000. I use mobile 1 full synthetic.

I change my 03 once a year with conventional oil (cause I only put about 1000 miles on it a year) and I change my 05's oil every 4k miles with Mobil 1 full synthetic.

The monte gets its oil changed every spring(royal purple)only put 500-2000miles a year on her.
The mule has only had one oil change in 2 years.Burns a quart every other week just change the filter every no an then.Cheap stuff untill the engine finally stop working an I put the new one in then it's royal purple.
Jess's cavi get it every 3000mi.It's very picky the engine just for some reason runs odd when you to 3000mi then it's fine after it's changed.Run castrol synthetic.
The druango gets it once a year every fall be for Jess drives it for the winter just gets the cheap stuff.

Some of the oil that comes out of these engine after 10k(toyota) just looks burnt. The filters tend to suck in on it self.I just wont let it go that long be thats just me.I'm getting old an set in my ways.

Plus these new cars coming out, to get better fuel economy some are going with turbos - you need to keep your oil fresh and clean with a turbo - let it go and you'll have some big repair bills.
I have a '94 Grand Am with a 3100, owned since '03 when it had 86K on it. Today I still drive it as a daily with over 210,000 on it. I change the oil and filter with conventional oil and I prefer a BOSCH oil filter (but I've used FRAM and AC Delco if I can't get a BOSCH), every 3000-5000 miles I change it. Car runs great. Oil does not look too bad.

Mike 00LS has a point about dirt/debris in the oil, longer you leave it, the more it makes it's rounds in the engine. This is why when I do things I clean the parts as best I can. Example, I changed the head gaskets on the Grand Am in '09 at 180,000.... I cleaned those heads so good you you could eat off them! I also cleaned the rockers and the push rods. That is that much less crud to flow through the engine.

The cars I winterize get fresh oil in the spring no matter the mileage on them (just safe insurance to longevity). Otherwise 3000-5000 is my rule.
