yah, thats still crazy, because i can see no more than 150-200 bucks to do entire brakes on that car in the quality they would use...then 1000 bucks labor! thats nuts!

That's exactly why I quit working on cars for a living. There's been too many times I have seen that happen. I am willing to say that the majority of real auto technicians are honest and try to do a quality job as best they can. The problem is the rest of them would screw their own mother to make a buck. Those are the ones you hear about the most and the ones who give the whole profession a bad reputation. I personally call them hacks, they don't even qualify to be a shade tree mechanic. I was an ASE Certified Master Technician for 12 years and just got tired of being lumped into the category of low life those few wannabe's. Unless it is under warranty and fixed for free I will continue to do it myself that way if it gets screwed up I know who to blame.[sm=icon_beat.gif]

While it is possible that the front rotors got overheated and were below minimum specifications to be machined, I find it unlikely because most old lady drivers are not flying around doing 80-0 panic stops all day.

And $36 for an oil change at a dealership isn't that bad. At Volvo, it comes out to about $52 total. But then, they take 6.3-7.8 quarts, depending on the car.

That is definitely crappy that he tried to upsell a brake flush, since that is basically part of the job anyway.

I've been a Volvo tech for almost two years and I'm already thinking I am too honest for this field. I see guys around me upseling all kinds of stuff that probably isn't do or die. It's frustrating, but I still somehow find a way to make my hours honestly so that keeps me going. At the dealership I used to work at, I caught the guy next to me selling rotors on every car he recommended pads on. He either wouldn't even measure the rotors, or would measure them and sell them anyway. He even put the actual measurements on the recommendation sheets, so it was easy for anyone to see that he measured them as above minimum specs. After confronting him didn't change anything, I wrote a three page letter to my service manager, which got passed along to the owner. The problem is, they get paid on the bottom line too, so if a tech sells a bunch of stuff, the managers get more money. I don't know what ever happened, as I changed dealerships. But they said they were going to watch it closely and if they ever caught anyone doing it, they would be fired. I guarantee that if I was still working there, people would have gotten fired. I can fix my own stuff and dishonest mechanics still **** me off to no end.

Well whizz in response to aftermarket parts, NO WAY NOT ON MY CAR!!! I don't get a warranty with aftermarket and sometimes they don't or won't fit as well. Now every once in awhile I will install something aftermarket but rarely.

I have been a tech for 30 years now.
I started out at Volvo..... I watched many techs do this. The day they wanted me to go commision was the day I locked up my tool box. I then went into the Air Force as a Fire Truck Mechanic. Spent 7 years with Uncle Sam. Since then I have worked on trucks. For compnays like Brinks and UPS.
You will never catch me working at a dealership again....

For those who can steal peoples hard earn money..... I hope you can sleep at night.....

I know I can, I have never taken someones money just to fix their car.... or truck.....

MOST AFTER MARKET PARTS ARE JUST AS GOOD AS DEALER PARTS IF NOT SOMETIME BETTER AND YES THEY DO COME WITH A WARRANTY

Back to the dealer this morning to fix the OnStar and the Service Mgr wants to speak to me. This is going to be interesting. Oh, I hope than can read since I am puting a not on the steering wheel not to install swirl marks from the car wash.

And to install the updated heater hoses.

After warranty, I install aftermarket parts and NEVER have had a problem on any car. Dealerships overfill the crankcase and do a poor job paying attention to the details. They overfilled the PS fluid when I brought in the MC for the PS leak. It was overflowing when I checked it when I got home. Service Advisor said it is fine = moron.

hold on...HOLD ON! who do you think makes ac delco parts? 90% of the time its a cheaper line from a company that makes the aftermarket parts...fenco makes their calipers and master cylinders and stuff...they're cheaper line...i sell their premium line...
raybestos makes acdelco brake pads, but they're the cheaper line of raybestos pads in the box.
delphi makes ac delco ignition and electronic parts, cheaper to buy it when it says delphi on the box though.
hubs are skf, but their cheaper line..and i can sell their premium line for less money than the ac delco(cheap skf) is...

and! the warranty is waaaaaay more on aftermarket parts than gm parts...no matter what...

yah if you buy cheap aftermarket parts then yes..you may have a problem with them...but if you stick with the premium stuff like moog, raybestos, skf...etc etc...you wont have problems and moog and raybestos come with a lifetime warranty...and as for not fitting...i dont know where this comes from..as all ac delco parts are made by other companies..so if the delco part fits so will the aftermarket part

and all name brand high end aftermarket parts are warranties...most lifetime
and i've yet to have an aftermarket part not fit ...most of the time they fit better
ok...rant off![sm=rant.gif]
