Default Remot start

My wife wants a remote starter installed in her 01 Monte Carlo SS for Christmas and I'm hesitant to do so because of the pass lock system. Are there any brands that work well with our cars or any brands to "stay away from"? Thanks,

Steve

I think I am getting one for my 04 Monte winter beater, but I am going to have it put in if Santa brings me one

I installed a remote start/keyless entry combo (so we only need one fob, not two) a couple years ago for my wife's '05 Impala (virtually the same as a Monte).
I'm not a remote start install master (and had a little help from a friend), but you can buy any remote starter. After that, you need to buy a bypass module for the Passlock system.

I got BOTH in seperate auctions from eBay (total I think was $70). The hardest part was being contorted under the dash reaching for wiring in very tight spaces. Again, it was a couple of years ago.

I am planning to add a remote start kit to my '02 Grand Am (since it's a winter beater, I'd love to pre-start it in cold weather).

I got a remote start system with security installed for around $400, and it's a great system. It's the Code Alarm 6551 system. It's 2-way and I haven't had any problems with it interfering with the pass-lock system.

Thanks guys, I'm feeling less nervous about it the more research I do.

As a GM tech, I'm HATE all aftermarket remote starts. Most are installed by hacking into critical wires. If a car comes in with an electrical problem and it turns out that it has one of these remote starts on it, It either get removed or the car doesn't get worked on. 9 times out of 10 (literally) the problem goes away once the remote start is removed.

I don't like walking out to start my Monte either. But God gave me 2 legs and I'd rather have my car 100% operational than all hacked up just to save 2 calories.

On a side note, I love that GM has offered a factory remote start since ~2006. Uses all existing wires and can be diagnosed just like any other module. I even bought my dad the "kit" for his 2011 2500HD for xmas.
