just read the whole thread, wow, your quite the entrepreneur. Mr. Jeep, moving and a grooving. I had a 80 CJ7, bought new while I was in the army, it only had the 4 banger, but did just fine for me.

Least the jeep driver had a fair amount of metal surrounding him. Our junkyard charges everyone $1 to enter, they say they figure everyone leaves with something in their pocket. They got to where they are checking your tool bags when you enter and leave.

i love the cherokee 4x4 i would buy another other one if i get a good deal on it. they cheap, very dependable, and plenty of room to haul stuff. the inline 6, 4.0 is like the 3800 motor. they will last long time with regular maintenance. im assumming you got the ax-4- 4 speed or ax-5- 5 speed. i read those sux the transmission usually go bad. ax-15 5 speed also produced in the '90 up to '00.

junk yard here charge $2 to enter and they check tool bag enter and leaving as well. since i got into jeep i meet lot of nice people either from selling parts or trade ran into on the street who happen to like jeep too. it's little different than when i used to own the monte. jeep people are chilled. i still love my trans am. if i have to chose which vehicle i refer i go with the trans am of course

snow and cold here in chitown i really like to do more to the jeep but i hate the snow and cold. i done few small stuff this weekend. replace the hood latch cable p.o. rig up this awful cable for the hood. the cable broked so he snaked it outside of the hood and pull it. not bad idea but looks dumb.

thought it be easy screw on and off thing but wasn't. it's not a hard job but taking off panel and screws sux, i go dizzy when tilting my head to unscrew the screws on the hatch panel.

here's why i love the jeep you can fit lot of stuff in the back hatch. just fold down the bench seat and you got room. a buddy in south side of chicago going to winterfest in attica, IN next months. it's an offroading fest. i pick up some parts for him to get his jeep ready. i would love to go but my jeep won't be ready yet. here's what i got in the rear hatch. all 3 pieces seats, center console, overhead console, and a hood. i bet you can't fit that in a monte carlo LOL.

It's good you turn your own wrenches and understand the Cherokee's intimately, makes for an enjoyable vehicle to own. I have always stayed away from them as I always heard they constantly had problems. Maybe it's the people who had the Grand Cherokee's when new, were to rich and never got their hands dirty who complained about the maintenance issues.

My CJ did have the 4 speed, the rear synchronizer went out and always had to hold the shift lever in place to preventing it from popping out of gear when in reverse.

I can now see why the header panel was such a score, and the right color too, BONUS!!

Just looking at the hatch pulled apart made me dizzy, especially knowing everything is upside down with the hatch open. Tough break on the washer fluid failing to squirt out, guess you have to take a win when there is one, wiper works, yeah!!

Jeeping is huge out here too, which makes a good jeep hard to locate as most are bought and refitted for MOAB ventures, it's a huge annual event, plus goes on year round to a lesser degree. I have looked for another CJ7 but they are pretty beat up and still average about $3500 for a heap. Bought mine new in 80 for about $8,000.

I hear you about not really being into turning wrenches in the cold weather, you guys in Chicago typically really get hammered. I'm orginally from Springfield and we did get some pretty cold winters when I grew up there. had a morning paper route back in the day and froze my butt off before school many a mornings. Yet nothing like Chicago gets.
Best of luck on your projects, the jeep is packed full of work, hell new heated seats as you already mentioned could be a nice selling point.

Im torn between a trail blazer and a jeep Cherokee/grand cherokee. I want something 4x4 that I can use over the winters so no one hurts my monte. Im thinking ill go with a Cherokee beacuse I'v heard such awesome things about the I6. Do you have a particular year you would recommend? I was thinking 95-99.

I would go with a cherokee, there seems like there is more options to do to a cherokee then the others.

yeah we got hit pretty hard with snow and freezing cold. i can't remember how many days it was snowing in january but i think it's like almost the whole month. it was in the 40* today. snow start melting away but there's still lot of snow left on the ground.

Moab that would be a place to go wheeling. saw some crazy rock crawling on youtube video. it's little bit out too far for me to make trip out there.

my bad zippy i read too fast thought you own a xj. im not familar to the cj but think they have different trans than the xj im not even sure on that. all i know is the transmission in the earlier 4 banger xj sux. im still pretty new on the cherokee scene. i will fix what ever i think i can do. if i cant i'll take to the shop or call up my buddy that i wheel with.

i definity pick the xj over the grand cherokee or blazer. well this is my 3rd xj there's probably a good reason i pick xj over any other suv lol. all this bad snow storm we had i haven't got stuck yet. you can take a beating on the xj and they still run good. if you just want to use for dd a 84-01 would do good. just stay away from the four banger cuz of trans problem. for the 00-01 they have bad head casting between cylinder 3 & 4. they tend to crack if over heat. it be hit or miss between those last 2 years not all will crack. i didn't have problem with my 2001. stuck lifters is pretty common problem. it be making ticking noise just as long as you give it gas and it doesn't tick any louder you should be fine. they have cancer like the honda. usually rust on floor board, rockers, and rear quarter panel. the 2 doors are rare to find but i like 4 doors better.

a 97-99 would be choice because dana 30 front axle high pinion is last year after 1999. 1999 also was the first year they use better intake manifold. 00-01 were also came with the new intake manifold. . 00-01 are low pinion. which ever year you decide to get i think you like the cherokee xj. once you start modding it can become addicting. J.E.E.P= just empty every pockets.
