I second that. The control arms are u-shaped stamped steel. The force taken to pull the car out will more then likely bend the crap out of them.

I'm not an expert on pulling a car from a ditch, but I think you'll need to find part of the frame to connect to.

Also, the OP sounds like landing his Monte in the ditch is fairly common, might I suggest new tires and take it easy during bad weather driving???

Try it. Unless they changed the way it shifts in the past 20 years. If in 3rd shifts like normal but no overdrive, like what you do when towing something. When in second My lumina stays in second. Havent driven in the snow with the monte so havent tried it.

That is correct it stays in second, but starts in first. There is no second gear start on these cars, which is what I assume you were telling him to try?

And it will only stay in second until you are red-lining the car and the computer forces the shift for you instead of ruining your engine.

You were right. Manuals are all the second gear trick works for.

Some automatic cars have a 2nd gear start override button. I know some Automatic F-Bodies have a button that will allow a true 2nd gear start.

I thought I remembered this also, but I couldn't think of any specific models to cite.

My 96 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1L had the 2nd gear start option - there was a toggle switch to the left of the steering column (I think that's where it was - it's been a long time LOL).

The best , safest way....is to use a"Rollback".......that way theres no undercarriage damage and it will load it right on to the truck bed ....they hook the cable to 2 chains that fit into the frame..(like a car hauler) and make a Y conection to the cable and pull it up and on...leaveing it damage free !!!! provided the operator of the "Rollback" knows the proper way to do it....
