Gas Milage

Usually, when I'm doing all city driving around 16 MPG, and I'm driving spiritedly. Right now when I parked it at the train station it read 18.2 MPG. That is city/hwy, but mostly city, and I've been trying to keep the RPM's below 2K, just trying to see what I can get. The best I've gotten so far was 22 MPG, I believe, but that was mostly hwy. I know I can get better if I ran a full tank on the hwy on a road trip.

i have a 2000 ss. only mods are SLP dual exhaust and the K&N cold air intake. if i keep a steady 65 mph on the freeway i get 27-28 mpg. unfortunatly the only time i spend on the freeway is 6 mile trips with occasional 12 mile trips to the next town over. in town i average about 23 mpg. worst ive gotten so far in it is 21 mpg under lots of acceleration combined with stop and go. best so far is 28 right after i filled up and was tryin to get the best mpg as possible, goin 60 mph on the freeway at like 1700 rpms. best ive gotten in town is 24 point somethin. that is assuming the computer is accurate. i have noticed that it says gas tank is empty and when i fill up it only takes 14 and a half gallons. that is based on the gas gauge tho and i need to fix the sensor thing cus at about 1/4 tank it starts goin haywire.

03 impala (stock other than pcm tune) - 22 city, 28 highway
99 gtp (all the basic bolt ons ~300 crank hp)- 21-22 city, 31 highway
96 monte w/ old near stock 3100 - 18 city 26 highway
96 monte w/ built L67 (w/ all kinds of various leaks and issues) - 13 city 22 highway
(hoping to do better since I've fixed some of the various problems- and keep in mind that the tune needs a lot of work)

Well, I did the road trip this weekend to see Ma and Dad. Filled up at home and reset everything. I pretty much babied this thing for MOST of the trip. Started out at 26.9 and stayed there for quite a while. After 175 miles at 77-78 mph, when I got off US131, I was at 26.2. After 75 miles of driving between 45 and 63, and arriving at Ma's and Dad's, it was at 27.4. Interesting! After a few miles of driving around up there, I started home this afternoon at 26.9 mpg again. I swung by my cousin's to see her on the way home (she lost her husband this past April, and had breast cancer surgery Tuesday), After 125 miles, it was still at 26.9, and all driving was at 62-63 mph. Getting back on the highway, and back to 77-78 mph, it proceeded to drop to 26.2 again. I got off the highway and drove the 6 miles to home, and it rose back to 26.3 mpg. 527 miles of mixed highway and freeway driving, and I averaged 26.3 mpg.
A couple of interesting things here, though: When I left yesterday morning, it was about 70 deg's, and I left shortly after it rained. The roads were wet. Did the extra moisture from the wet roads help the mileage by .7 mpg, like water injection? And why did I get MUCH better mileage at 62 mph vs. 77 mph? 1.2 MPG better! And lastly, I only average 21.3 mpg commuting. It is QUITE apparant that I commute with a heavy foot! OOPS!
BTW, I run 245-45-18 tires at 28.5 psi. More psi would improve mileage, but decrease tire life. I also ran with the sunroof open the entire trip, with windows cracked and air off. And I run on only 93 octane gas.
I feel that with skinnier tires pumped up, I could probably hit 28-29 mpg, but skinny tires? NO WAY!

on a side note. is tehre a speed governer for a 2000 SS? i felt the urge after burning out down the road to hit 130 on the freeway. did it pretty quickly too. felt like it had a lot more in it.
