It sounds like you may have a 'torque-lock' situation. This happens when you put the car in park and don't apply the parking brake. The car rolls either forward or backward a bit and the lock in the transaxle gets jammed. Have a friend assist you, and have them rock the car back and forth as you turn the key. This situation normally happens when parking on an incline, but can also happen on level ground. Good luck...

 

ive never had it what you ^^^ described happen and the key get stuck, but ive had what you described happen on my 80 parking on a steep hill without the ebrake. couldnt get her out of gear felt like i was going to break the shifter in half. had to have a friend get out and rock the car from behind.
