Smile Best Oil for High Milage

Hey Everyone,

I am thinking of starting to do my own oil changes instead of having a shop do it. My 2004 Monte with the 3.8 and I've got 257,000 miles on it. What would be the best brand / type / weight of oil and filter for me? I was thinking Vavoline Max Life 5W-30, and a Fram or AC filter. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
AJ

I guess this is just an individual thing. I only use Mobil 1, and prefer GM parts. Never had any problems. As long as you use quality oil and the correct weight,...

Any high-quality 5w-30 is fine. I would stay away from FRAM filters and run either ACDelco, NAPA Gold, or Wix. I normally buy my wix 51040 filters from amazon

I totally agree with ChibiBlackSheep. Most any high quality oil is good for normal driving. I would consider a syn-blend or full syn just for the extra protection, in case you stretch the oil change. Also avoid the FRAM filters. Search YouTube for oil filter comparisons to see why.

Just my humble opinion and I am NOT an expert.

X3 or 4 or whatever we're up to now.

No Fram. Any reputable / approved oil.

I'm sure you're aware, but even with 100% perfect maintenance, you're into the mile range for engine failure. No doubt some go much much longer, but don't be surprised either if it tanks suddenly tomorrow.

Because the mileage is so high, I wouldn't be putting super expensive high end stuff in it. I'd rather put that extra money towards saving for a replacement engine if you plan to keep the car.

I’ve always ran Castrol full synthetic 10w30. 5w30 was only introduced as a means of fuel economy by the EPA. I currently use Mobil 1 oil filters. The construction is top notch quality.
But never use Fram. Wix used to be really good but they cheaped out in the last 6 years. ACDelco is still pretty good quality but I prefer the Mobil 1’s.
my car has 265km’s on it and during my top swap I had a good look at the internals and it’s very good condition for the mileage and driving habits...
