Default 2002 ls

So I have a 2002 monte carlo LS, and lately I've been thinking i really want to put a real engine in it, and switch over to a manual transmission and rear wheel drive. I was wondering if anybody has any idea what type of engine I'd be able to put in, and how much it costs. Time and equipment aren't a problem, I have all summer and access to an extensive garage, and a mechanic who will help me with a lot of the work because I don't know much about mechanics. I've raced cars for years, but I never did many of the repairs. The car was basically free, so I don't want to sell it to get anything else.

Wow! Sounds like a hell of a lot of work.
I can't give any advice, just amazed at the idea. Would love to see pics if you do do project.

Definitely, I was hoping to turn it into a drift racing car eventually.
