5th Gen ('95-'99): 1999 Model - ABS Light is on. Could use some help with diagnosis.
Have a little free time and I'm trying to fix up my Monte Carlo.
I've managed quite a bit, but right now I don't have anti-lock breaks.
They used to cut in and out during the winter, and about a month ago, the light came on and has stayed on.
Unfortunately I have the car jacked up and uninsured, so I can't take it anywhere for a proper diagnosis.
If I had to guess, I would say it's the wheel bearings, but I would really like a second opinion before I start putting more money into this.
A friend of mine is telling me that there might be air in the break line, but I highly doubt it.
Does anyone here have any ideas that could help me?

Well it could be a number of things. Wheel bearings i doubt it unless you have a humming noise from either side while driving it. On each axle there are ABS sensors that sometimes get dirty, or a wire may break, first off check there. Second is the ABS module it's self unfortunately that can be a pretty pricy fix there. I am not sure what all the ABS module its self does on a Monte, however when the one on my Silverado went out it effected the way the transmission sifted along with traction control. If you have a pretty good code scanner it should tell you exactly what the problem is.
It's too hard saying without knowing what the code is. It could be wiring, a wheel speed sensor, or even the ABS module. The ABS system in my 98 Z34 was overactive, so I just pulled the fuse to disable it and now all four tires lock up nicely
