I am at step #18 and I have two questions.
How exactly did you get the leverage to pry it off utilizing the transmission housing? I have a small pry bar, and a crow-bar and neither has a fulcrum point on the trans housing to pry off of...
and where would you place the hammer strike to give it the most effective love tap?

Both my axles came out with the circlip on them and the new axles went in with new clips too. If it doesn't come out with the axle do some fishing around in there. It is possible that your old able never had one to begin with. When I replaced my thermometer I found that there wasn't an old one to remove. Never underestimate the previous owner
