I’ve been running MSD coil packs ever since I had my MC bout 4years nvr had an issue. Still don’t have one till this day so IMO MSD coil packs are grade A I don’t post anything on here I just do a lot of reading but just had to put it out there, yea they might not do a single thing for power but idc I pay whatever I have to to keep it lookin A1 I’d nvr spray any paint only professionally done is wat I like.

 

But to be fair, your sample size here is 1 set, right?

Certainly never said that every single pack will fail prematurely, just that there is a lot of evidence out there from people with issues with them - especially back in the clubgp days when 3800 modding was in full swing and people were innovating and trying new stuff.

To the OP - if you're still seriously considering MSD, take a look at clubgp on wayback machine or one of the other older boards big for 3800s that dates back into the 2000s. Theres plenty of posts out there if youre interested to research it. IMO thats the reason virtually no one goes anywhere near them nowadays (well, and ZZP / Stattama running 8s on stock ones, lol).

Two things on that-
-If the power gain is zero, is it really worth the potential for reduced reliability just for the look? Sure your set was good, but there have been lots of people out there with issues, and IMO reliability should take a higher priority than looks.

-Im not exactly talking about no prep spraying with a 50 cent can of paint from the dollar store clearance bin. If one were to do it right, you could make them look as good or better than the factory paint on the body of your car, and make it whatever color you want. Personally I don't get the desire to draw attention to some 80s tech waste spark coil packs, but I get everyone has their own thing. Just trying to give an alternative thats potentially cheaper and more reliable.

 

I too agree as having bought MSD coils only to have 1 fail. It seemed the plastic housing had a small hole on it. Im assuming it got to hot and burned its way out of the housing as if I remember correctly the hole had dark edges resembling melted plastic. Under wot electricity would escape and short out to ground. Thus the mysterious misfire was finally traced to this faulty MSD coil. Bought new GM L67 coils and after say 5 or so years they are still performing flawlessly.

 

That’s true bumpin reliability is way more important than looks but they’ve worked fine for me my MC isint a daily driver either, others probably drive there’s everyday but MSD coils work for me I’m saying me personally I haven’t had issues, as for painting ur own idk that’s just my personal preference I’d spend the $$ guess I don’t have an issue spending the $$.

 

Seen the mass of you talk highly about L67 coils....Im gonna do more research now.

 

Just to be clear though, no one is trying to say there will be a measurable gain going to them, especially not in your application. Just don't want you to be disappointed compared to back when your stock coils were still good.

Popularity started with the junkyard diver crowd as its the best GM made for this ignition system and the same price at the junkyard - a coil's a coil at the register.

 

I agree; a coil is a coil. Junkyard guy liked my MC so much that the L67's were on him....he just wants to see the car finished right along with the engine bay.
