Default What type of tranny do I have

I have a 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo SS 3.8L It has 16 wires on the harness. I was told that I am suppose to make sure the tranny I purchase has the same amount of wires on it. Is this true?

Also this is my vin# I am posting it just incase it helps.

VIN:2G1WX12KX39140974

Thanx in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum. We have the 4T65E tranny in our Monte's, years 2000 to 2005.

When you get a chance try and post up some more infor on your Monte and toss in a picture or 2. You doing any modifications to it or have any planned? Anyway take care and stay in touch.

What state are you located in?

Does that go for the LS too or just the SS?

All the Monte's from 2000 to 2005 have the 4T65E.

With the exception of the Supercharged Models which have the 4t65e-HD

And in 2003 they switched over a few of the internals where you can't use an older trans and your 03+ PCM, they also strengthened the 4th gear shaft.

Hello thank you for your response. I am in Los Angeles, and I have a 2003 Mote Carlo 2.8L SS That I bought and just want to replace the transmission , and keep everything original. No modifications or anything. The Tranny that is in it is no good.

A friend of mine has a tranny from a 1999 grand prix, and we were wondering if that would fit? I was told that I should look at the harness wires that goes from the engine to the tranny and count those wires. Which on mine are 16 wires. The car his tranny came out of had 14 wires coming from the harness.

2003 starts the change of the internals, so you do have to look for a different one.
