The reasoning behind not flushing a transmission with high miles is that once the bands start wearing down and losing their "bite" if you flush out all the old fluid, you are removing some of the grit left inside that help the bands grab each other. I cant remember how many quarts it takes if you just drop the pan, but it will tell you in your owners manual. Just get the correct fluid and the correct amount and get a pan gasket and transmission filter and you should be good to go.

So my manual says after pan removal 7.4 quarts to replace.

It says it uses Dexron III - Should I continue using that or upgrade to Dex-6?

Can I still even get Dexron 3 at auto part stores?

 

Just use Dextron III. Yes you can still get it at the stores.

 

Talked to my local mechanic and just as everyone said that is something that can be twisted both ways and that he doesn't really believe to mess with it after X amount of miles.

I asked him to inspect for any leaks and to make sure I've got adequate fluid and I'm not going to mess with it.

So Oil Change, Tire Rotation and Inspection of the pan w/ possibility of fluid added today is my service job.

 

It will say Dexron 3, because Dexron 6 wasn't invented yet.

It's not that you NEED 3 to run it, because 6 is just 3...but better!

I would still get 6 put in. It's very much worth it.

 

Dexron 6 started being used in 2006 in ALL GM car and trucks...

And yes, Dexron 6 is a better fluid than Dexron 3, if you were doing a complete flush, which I would NOT do, then I would use dexron 6, but for just a pan drop, I would continue using Dexron 3...Yes, the fluids ARE compatible, but I personally just don't like mixing fluids..but that is just a personal preference.

If I was you, I would drop the pan and change the fluid. I would not do a complete fluid flush, but I would drop the pan and get 7.5 quarts of new fluid, plus a new filter in there. Yes, i've heard not to change the fluid after so many miles, and I agree, I would not do a complete flush, but I would change half of it. ATF DOES break down, and loose its ability to protect. Eventually you will run into tranny problems due to a lack of maintenance. Flushing may be overkill, and make your tranny "freak" and not changing will EVENTUALLY kill it. So i'd do a pan drop.

As for me, I changed my tranny fluid for the first time at 20K, then again at 50K...now I will change it every 50K form now on. So the next change will be at 100K...This is just my way of doing things, but I believe that the tranny should be maintained to, and I think many people kinda forget about the transmission when it comes to maintenance.
