Well, I am just throwing ideas out when I mention this, but here goes:

My mom has a 2000 Bonneville with the 3800, and the tach kept droping to ZERO while we were driving it, even when cruising on the highway, sometimes it would just drop to zero, but the engine and car would continue to drive like normal.

In this case it was a bad Crank Position Sensor....

Like I said, I'm just throwing ideas out there, but maybe it could be the crank sensor since you are loosing your speedo????

Just had this problem (gauge) with my 2005 MC SS. Turned out it was the gauge cluster. The dealer replaced it and all is fixed. The tranny issue I did not have.
