Performance Chips vs. Tuners
If you want performance, depending on your budget of course, you should look at a S/C top swap (L67 or L32) or Turbocharge. After all the mods and the power adder, you get an HP Tuner and fine tune your ride. You'll be very happy with the results. Top Swap is less expensive than a turbo, in the beginning since you can get the parts for very cheap (Specially for an L67, although I would recommend the L32), but then it starts to get pricier due to costlier mods like ported aluminum heads, higher flowing TB, etc. Turbo gets your engine to pick power faster than a top swap but it's more expensive. With either power adder you will want to reinforce the trans and differential, as well as the suspension. The problem with adding mods to your car is that you always want to go faster, and that cost moola!
He can't do a top swap, he has an 06 SS, which is the 5.3L V8.
Yea, those ebay ones are a real scam.
My dad has the Deablo Sport Preditor tuner for his 02 Mustang GT, and it did make a difference. Plus it lets you custom program things. In your case, you have an automatic, so the Diablo will let you choose shift points, etc.

I've heard plenty of things about the diablo tune for the V8 guys. They seem to like it.
To me, you can't beat a custom tune. There are plenty of forums all about tuning. You may be able to find one of THOSE forums, and ask if people are in your area. That's how I got my tune and it cost me $50.
Half the price of the "canned" tune with probably 100x better performance.

Nix the S/C, I thought I read you has an L36! But you can always go turbo. I'm not sure if there's a turbo kit for your car, being a 3.5 and all, but, if you know a decent mechanic, buying the parts and having it installed "custom" should be that expensive (specially for the power that your car WILL make). Ever since I had to spend $1300.00 reprogramming my vehicle thanks to a Hypertech 3 POS, I recommend folks to stay clear of the "can Chips".

HP Tuners is a nice setup! I tuned a few LSXs with it and it is extremely intuitive and enables you to quickly and effectively to use it.
I am a Controls Engineer so I am not new to tuning, but I am very impressed with HP Tuners. If it supports your car I would say that should be the front runner for a tuning suite.

Ok, I stand corrected AGAIN! Go with a twin turbo set up and leave it at that, lol. Get the HP tuner anyway, even if you don't get the turbo.
