Ignition/timing problem, need experienced help.
if youre going to be spraying the car i would run the petronix distributor, external coil, and i believe petronix makes a ignition box with a rev limiter, and a timing retarder. whats your current combo as we speak. heads, cam, intake, trans, and gearing?
Camelback heads, I don't know the cam specs ( I know ) edelbrock rpm performer 350turbo and a built rear end that I know nothing about ;-/ I bought it from a guy who said it was built for the 1/8 mile he vanished though. I have a horrible leak also from the valve cover I replaced the crappy ones on the heads to the edelbrock elite ones. Still leaking with very thick gaskets and clamps and arp bolts. That's actually why I originally took the distributor out I thought it was leaking from the ripped seal beneath the disty and the oil sending unit it's about 1270 miles on the engine since it was rebuilt
It's very easy to overtighten the valve cover bolts on a SBC and cause a leak. They only need to be tightened enough to begin compressing the gasket. I've had the best luck using cork gaskets impregnated with rubber made by either Felpro or McCord. To prevent the bolts from vibrating loose use a little blue threadlock of them when installed.
valve cover leaking does happen i personally havent had this happen in a very long time. currently running cork gaskets no rtv, no lock tight. if it was built to be an 8th mile car i would expect it to have 4.11s, or numerically higher. this can be checked by marking the driveshaft, and a wheel. spinning the wheel, and counting rotations. its not an exact number, but will give you a ballpark.
