Hello, this is my first post and I apologize ahead of time if it's in the wrong section. I've got 5,000 I'm looking to spend on an engine and transmission for my 1980 Monte Carlo. The car doesn't have either in it. I don't need brand new parts either, used is fine I'm not looking to restore a car, I'm looking to put some power in this beast. So the question I'm asking is how much horsepower can I churn out and what types of engines and tranny combos are the best for my $5,000 budget? Thanks!!!

 

Get a crate motor and rebuilt trans are your best bet. Get a used motor and trans, you need to rebuilt it both. Pro's are you get to choose the parts you want. Con's are it get expensive fast.

Either way, your choice.
