Opinion Needed: Alternator Question

Default Alternator Question

ok so i had a question i wanted to get a alternator from singeralternators.com, they got some good looking alternators there, mines is working fine but it squeaks when cold because i had a coolant problem so sooner or later it will need to go, what i am curious about is i know we have 102-105 amps maybe even 125 amps. but is there a way i can safely have it to atleast 125 amps and not worrying about damaging any battery or engine components? i want 150 but i think that is pushing it

Its my experience that the higher voltage alternators are basically designed to handle powering up added accessories... like a cop car for instance.. running radios, lights, sirens heater/AC wipers etc all at the same time...But the relative voltage for the charging system shouldn't be a problem as well as keeping your battery charged...

The computer controls how much voltage is allowed to run through the system.. (Regulated) So a higher output from the alternator would only be allowed to put out extra power only when its needed to keep up with whats being used over and above the standard stuff you normally use...or the car needs.

ok i was worring because i know when you over charge a battery it goes boom so i was wondering about that

I have a heavy duty alternator in mine...(Cant remember the amps) Its a lot!
But, I'm running 4000 watts of stereo system, That I have been running for the life of mine to date and its a non issue.. (15 yrs)

From what I recall, the factory '00-'05 Monte had a 102amp and 105amp (depending what year you have depends which was standard) and an upgrade for a 125amp.

I believe mine is a 105amp. I had a 125amp on mine for about a week (long, silly story) and replaced with a stock spec (not due to any failures in the system (again long, silly story).

As long as everything is working, even if you went to a 125 amp, just as David said, it ensures power is available when it's needed during a high draw. You should not be at any risk of destroying the battery as the car/alt should be able to properly regulate the charging.
