Default 327 Motor for my Monte???

Hello all, I have a question about an engine swap im considering. I have an 84 Monte SS with the original 305 motor, unfortunately I blew the motor about three years ago and the car has been sitting ever since. I would like to fix her up. My old boss has a new 327 motor he's looking to sell for $1200. Is this motor good for my baby? and what do you think about the price?? I love the car , but am not really a car guy. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

LOL, thanks. I want to rip the 305 out and I was thinking of throwing a 350 in. But for the price on a brand new motor, I think im just gonna go with the 327 my old boss is selling.

first things first i would make sure the motor is what hes telling you it is. id make sure it has a decent set of heads on it. heres a site with casting numbers.

and heres one for the engine block.

its very important you check these all small block chevys are fairly similar from the outside and you could wind up in worse shape then your in (ie it could be a 307 making 110hp) you gotta be careful with old motors like the 327 and 283 some of them dont have accessories holes drilled in them. obviously your going to want to know the cam specs what intake and carb are on it and other basic things. 1200 isnt bad if its what he says it is.
