I want a posi unit
I have an 84 mc with a buick 455 and a powergluide. All i need now is a posi unit. I was told that i can use the posi unit out of a 4x4 blazer or a carmaro and what about the axles. I know that a mc ss,gn, and a 442 cutlass whloe rear end will work but cant find one. Can i use the 4x4 jimmy blazer or camaro posi unit and axles?

You can go a few diff routes, find a OE limeted slip diff for a 7.5in rearend you would have to check the splines on the axles as i dobelive are 27 spline, or get yourself a 8.5in rearend out of a GN that would be limeted slip and a direct bolt in, or get yourself a aftermarket 12bolt or 9in you have a few diff options i think you could even use a rearend out of a A body

i think the axles for the 7.5 are 26 spline or 28. if the rear is the stock factory rear it should be a 26 spline. you could check local speed shops too, they sometimes have carriers for sale. getting a gn or 442 rear would give you a far more desirable 8.5 ring gear with 28 spline axles but at that cost your probably better of going through dts and getting a bolt in 12 bolt 9" or dana 60. or you could also go and buy a 7.5 28 spline carrier and 28 spline axles and reuse your housing. then your weak link would be the small ring gear but other then that itll be as tough as the gn rear. i believe the a body/b body rears are to wide. on a side note if this is just a full drag setup then you could always go the spool route. i would be careful with gearing if its a street car. to my knowledge big buicks dont like to rev and that two speed is going to hurt you. personally if it were me i would look for a used ss rear with no more than 3.42s in it, a set of wide sticky meats, some traction bars, and a little converter.

yeah im running the same rear as you with some upgrades. they really cant take any type of punishment. thats the bonus to the SS cars a little peppier of a motor, the overdrive, the posi and gearing, and the best part the looks. unfortunately instead of putting a real motor in those SSs they just geared the **** out of the car so it wouldnt be a complete dog.
