Default 3.1 vs 3100?

My fried had an accident with his Oldsmoble achieva and said he does not plan on fixing it. It has a 3.1 in it, will that work in a Monte Carlo LS that has a 3100 in it? His is a little older, mines a 96 and i believe his s a 94 or a 95. I was just wondering because I have a mass air flow sensor and he does not. Would things like that mess up my computer? Or would this work out for me? thank you.

The Achieva 3.1 is a 3100 (if you look under the hood, the upper intake should have 3100 on it). It will work, but there are minor differences to account for when swapping. The the '95 and earlier 3100 used a 3 solenoid EGR, yours I believe has a digital EGR. Swap the UIM and the EGR, you're fine. You may have to swap a sensor or two. As for the MAF, just use yours (if I recall you MAF is on the air tube that feed the throttle body).

But, if I were to swap a 3100 out, I would consider s 3400 swap. From what I have read, it's almost a direct swap, no trans or PCM issues. Do a search, there's a Grand Am guy with a GREAT right up about it. It would give you more performance then a 3100 and probably cost the same in the end (well, if you have to buy an engine, if your friend is giving you the one out of the Achieva, forget I said anything lol).

Thank you very much for your reply, I'd looooove to stick a 3400 in that bad boy!

Here's a GREAT right up from the Grand Am community on doing a 3100-to-3400 swap. Very informative.
