As far as the 3.1L v6 goes I have one in my Lumina and no problems at 140k miles its a 94 so might be diffrent. One advatage to the 3.1 not many ppl know about is that you dont need to drop the engine to work on it like alot of the new stuff. You can Roll it forward after you get the front wheels up and work on the back side of the engine.
As far as 3400 go you should be able to put any engine that bolts to your tranny. Any 3400 from any car should work. Id be willing to bet you could even throw a 3800 in if you wanted to. Chevy used to use the same engine mounts for small and big block motors all you needed to do was flip over the mounting bracket, but that was way older and off topic. I dont see them complicating things with 100 different brackets tho.

Also, just because the 3500 v6 makes more hp then the 3400 v6 doesn't mean that it gets worse gas mileage. In fact, it's nearly identical, and in some cases gets better gas mileage then the 3400's. My friend with an 04 Malibu has gotten 35mpg with his 3500 v6. My wife's 03 Malibu with a 3100 has gotten 30 1/2mpg, and makes a LOT less hp then my friend's Malibu. If you can get your hands on a 3500, do it. If not, then stick with a 3400 v6. There's no point in downsizing.

Interesting thread. I have a 3400 in my '03 LS, and I've been trying to figure out what to do with it. I was thinking about putting a 3800 in it, but I'm curious about the 3900. Will it fit in a car that was originally a 3400? I know the trannys are different, but I need to replace my tranny anyway, and I was going to get one out of a 3900 car.
I was thinking 3800 because of the huge number of mods for them. But I like the fact that I can get a 3900 with under 30,000 miles for less than $650 around here.

I have beeen reading up a little bit. The LX9 seems to be the original of that family of engines. it would take some time to figure out how to make it work but it would be the one you would want. You would still need to get another tranny to handle the power, run more sensors, take the wiring harness, pcm, probably redo engine mounts as well. the other 3.9's (for example LZ9) have a form of valve timing in the computer that you would automatically lose if you didnt swap the pcm with it. other engines in that family have flex fuel which again requires the pcm. and other stuff that makes it even harder to try and firgure out to make it work.

Good info. I see that Morad has a 3900 out of a G6 that comes with the tranny, pcm, and wiring harness. I may end up trying to go with something like that for my swap. Hopefully it would just be a matter of the motor mounts then. Hard to say without finding someone who has actually done the swap.

The 3.4L DOHC v6 (LQ1) is COMPLETELY different then the 3400 v6 (LA1). The only thing in common between those two engines is that they are both 60* v6's, but that's it.
Also, just because the 3500 v6 makes more hp then the 3400 v6 doesn't mean that it gets worse gas mileage. In fact, it's nearly identical, and in some cases gets better gas mileage then the 3400's. My friend with an 04 Malibu has gotten 35mpg with his 3500 v6. My wife's 03 Malibu with a 3100 has gotten 30 1/2mpg, and makes a LOT less hp then my friend's Malibu. If you can get your hands on a 3500, do it. If not, then stick with a 3400 v6. There's no point in downsizing.

okay so what did the 3500 motors come in, and will those bolt right in no extra anything, will in bolt to my tranny

I had discussed reprogramming my PCM with Will at Overkill, and he told me that the 3500 transmission would bolt right up to the 3400. He said the only difference is the gear ratio. I haven't swapped my tranny yet, so I can't garantee that info is correct, but that is what he told me.
