Default maximum tire width

I am looking to purchase new tires for my 2004 intimidator which has stock 235/55/17's on stock chrome wheels. I have been told that 245/50/17 would fit but there are not a lot of summer performance tires in that size. Would a 255 tire fit on stock suspension, etc. Any help is appreciated.

I run 255×45×17 nitto 555's no rubbing. I'm not lowered and I'm using American racing Santa Cruz wheels

Thanks Turbo Monte. Can you let me know what width your Santa Cruz rims are to fit the Nitto's?

Thanks again. I'm thinking of going with the Nitto 255X45X17 on 8 inch rims. With your set up, did you have to change the suspension/struts/shocks anything cause I only have stock parts at this time on my '04 Intimidator. I don't want to order the tires and rims and find out they won't fit. Thanks for your assistance turbo monte.

i dont know much about wheel offest other than it can change how tucked the wheel is or how far out the wheel is. if you get an offset that tucks the wheel in further then you cant run as wide of tire and if you run a offset that pushes the wheel out it allows for a wider tire. idk how they calculate it or anything though.
