Default '87 SS Rear Tire Size

What is the biggest wheel and tire combination you can put on the rear of an '87 SS? Right now I'm running a 255 on 8.5" wheels, but this just isn't going to cut it for me new motor.

I would like to run a 305 tire if it will fit. Can anybody help me? I don't want any tire sticking out from the fender, so what is the absolute widest I can go on the back??

Yes I know I will have to buy a wider rim, but I need to know what the widest tire I can get under there is before I buy them. Thanks!!!

BTW. I will be running Nitto NT555R drag radials.

Hi Kurt,
Its great to see you online and posting what you are doing
to your Hot Rod Monte Carlo : )
I did some searching and found that some are putting
lightweight aluminum American Racing rims and some 290/50/RZ15 rear BF Goodrich tires on the reare of their 87.
You also may want to check out the below drag link on this 87.
You can also email him and ask questions.

if you get new rims you can get a 10" rim with the right back space and run a 305/50/15 no prob a friend of mine is running that right now but i dont have the specs on the rims but they are available and it can be done

oh ! i am seeing that you dont want your tires to stick out from the fenders thats gonna be harder to do w/o notching the frame because your tires will rub on the inside
and i am not sure here because different rim back space can do different things but you can go up to a 275 on the stock rim it close but it fits

Thanks for the replies. I don't have to run a 305, but I sure would like to. 88ss408, do you have any pics of what this set-up looks like on your friends Monte? I would like to see just how much they stick out, if at all.

I was thinking I could at least get a 295 tucked under the wheel wells without any troubles. On my first Monte SS, an '84, I had a pretty decent size tire tucked under there, but it was so long ago that I can't remember what it was!!!!

I am doing a motor rebuild right now. It already had apretty strong motor, but it wasn't as "beefy" as I wanted. It really needed some better internals.Sonow it's getting built right. I'm running a stroker motor, but it's actually going to be bored60 over, so instead of a 383 it will technically be a388.This motor combo has been dynoed by a speed shop at 500 hp.The motor should be done and in the carwithin 2 weeks. Now I just have to get some meatinthe back so I can putit to the pavement!!!

Plus 100 shot of NOS.
